Associação entre Estado Nutricional, Exames Laboratoriais e Sintomas em Crianças de 0 a 3 Anos com Diagnóstico de Alergia Alimentar Usuárias de um Centro de Referência no Distrito Federal

Introduction: Food allergy – an abnormal clinical reaction involving
specific immunological mechanisms – has experienced a sharp
increase in the recent decades and is considered a serious public
health problem.
Objective: To investigate the association between nutritional status,
laboratory tests and symptoms in children aged 0 to 3 years old
diagnosed with food allergy.
Methods: The records of children aged 0 and 3 with food allergy
containing the following data were analyzed: birth date, place of
birth, time of exclusive breastfeeding, weight and symptoms such
as urticaria, atopic dermatitis, diarrhea, vomiting, gastroesophageal
reflux, colic, constipation, respiratory disorders, flatulence, and blood
in stool; and the followingbiochemical tests: hemoglobin, immunoglobulin
a ‑ IgA immunoglobulin E ‑ IgE, albumin, alpha‑ 1 ‑ antitrypsin
and eosinophils. The statistical analysis used a chi‑square test, with
significance level of 5%.
Results: By associating each of the symptoms with laboratory tests
and nutritional status data, it was confirmed that low weight, vomiting,
diarrhea, gastroesophageal reflux, colic, constipation, respiratory
disorders, bloating, and blood in the stool of children did not have
a significant relation with levels of hemoglobin, IgE, albumin, alpha
1‑antitrypsin and eosinophils (p > 0.05), with the exceptions of vomiting
and alpha1‑antitrypsin, and blood in the stool with eosinophils
(p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The results show that no association between symptoms
of food allergy and laboratory tests used in the program were
found. Such results indicate the need for new controlled and randomized
studies.
