Adhesion to Medication in the Elderly group of “Golden Age” from the Faculty of Science and Education Sena Aires of Valparaiso of Goias-GO

Abstract

Abstract: In the past few years, the elderly population in Brazil
has been growing, consequently leading to an increase in the amount
of health issues. For a suitable and high grade treatment, it is necessary
that the elderly population adhere to the necessary medication.
Objective: This study aims to assess the adherence to medication
of the elderly in the group of “Golden Age” in Faculty of Science and
Education Sena Aires (FACESA) of Valparaiso of Goias-GO.
Methods: Cross-sectional studies were conducted in FACESA in
September 2012. The sample consisted of 30 subjects, of both sexes,
members of the group of” Golden Age” after specific selection criteria.
Data were collected through a questionnaire adapted from the Monitoring
Method Dader Pharmacotherapeutic, in addition to an analysis
of prescription, and socioeconomic and sociodemographic variables,
lifestyle, health status and medication use.
Results: When evaluating the use of medications, it was observed
that 6.7% (n=2) of the elderly did not use medication at the determined
times, 16.7% (n=5) used sporadically and 76.6% (n= 23) ingested
medication at the stipulated times. It was observed that 20%
(n=6) of the elderly had difficulty in getting the drugs from the Unified
Health System (SUS) and sometimes had to buy the drugs; 3.3% (n=1)
admitted they had great difficulty in acquiring medicine and13.3%
(n=4) had little difficulty.
Conclusion: The greatest difficulties faced by the elderly in adhering
to the medication reception was to attain themselves to the drugs
offered by the Unified Health System (SUS) and their difficulty at
taking their medication at a pre-determined time.
