Abstract

Abstract: Concern about health and aesthetics have increased
through the years, thus, there is a need of further studies. Aging is
triggered by several factors, but the main one is the excessive amount
free radicals in the body, leading to damage to DNA (deoxyribonucleic
acid) molecules and loss of biological functions such as changes in
the collagen’s structure. Diminishing The Action Of free radicals is
supported by the adequate intake of antioxidants.
Objective: The objective of this article is to analyse the usage of
the aqueous extract of Alfavaca (Ocimum gratissimum) against DNA
damage and associate its potential as an adjunctive treatment against
premature aging.
Methods: An experimental study was made, in which generator
systems of oxidative damage to the target DNA molecule (bacterial
plasmid) were assembled in vitro, through the addition of medicinal
plants’ extracts (Ocimum gratissimum) in varied concentrations. The
levels of DNA protection by the antioxidant compounds existent in
plant extracts were analyzed by electrophoresis in agarose gel.
Results: The results show that there only was genuine protection
in the sample containing crude extract among the two studies done
with the dried plant. The study conducted with the fresh plant had
inconclusive results nevertheless, there is a need of more accurate
analysis about these antioxidant molecules.
Conclusions: The study revealed that there antioxidants became
present during the infusion of crude extract fusion of basil. Premature
aging of the skin is directly linked to the presence of free radicals in
the body, and can be associated with the consumption of basil in the
adjuvant treatment against aging.
