Abstract

Introduction: Distance Education (DE) arises
to offer learning and Internet interactivity, becoming a way to
promote the professional qualification required for guaranteeing
individuals’ ability to succeed in a competitive and changeable
market.
Objective: To investigate the main attitudes of students and
teachers regarding the adoption of the distance education mode
of instruction.
Methods: This is a review of the literature of articles indexed
in Medline, Lilacs, NCBI, SciELO and Cochrane, focusing on the
ones published within the last ten years, in languages such as
Portuguese, English and Spanish.
Results: The DE is an effective alternative to meet the large
demand for initial and continuing education in our country.
The interaction between DE students is done through discussion
tools within the virtual environment, such as forums, chat and
blog, among others. The teacher’s role in distance education is to
organize, stream line and guide the student’s knowledge gathering
path. The student, when joining a distance learning course,
should be aware of the procedures to be followed consistently
to use the resources available to themin the virtual environment.
Studies indicate the existence of a higher cognitive activity and
better memory for negative words if compared to positive ones.
A factor that influences the attitudes from both sides is the role of
the teacher and of the students in distance education, once it assumes
the same configuration as that of the traditional classroom.
Conclusion: The attitudes of students and teachers have a
significant role in the process of distance education, and depend
on individual motivation to achieve professional success and/or
curiosity of the learner and his involvement with the course.
