Risks Related to the Interactions of Medication and Food

Abstract

The association between medication and nutrients can produce
the occurrence of undesirable interactions, allowing an increase or
decrease in the effectiveness of the medication, as well as of the nutrient.
The phenomenon of medication‑nutrient interaction can take
place before or during the gastrointestinal absorption, during the distribution
and storage in the tissues, in the biotransformation process,
or even during excretion. Therefore, the goal of this article to clarify
the dangers related to medication interactions with food, making it
possible to alert the reader about a subject that few take into account,
in spite of its importance during the treatment with medication. The
survey was conducted based on a literature review, consulting the
BIREME and SciELO databases on the period of 2009‑2013, with the
study of 20 articles. Interactions between nutrients and medication
can alter the availability, action or toxicity of each of these substances,
or of both. It is suggested that professionals may take more advanced
courses on the subject, considering that patients do not have the
knowledge of the precautions that must be followed during the treatment
with medication.
