Abstract

Objective: To investigate the signs of criminality in a context of
non‑interaction between the individuals with society.
Methods: A probit model was used. The selection of this model
allows to assess the likelihood that an individual, amidst a set of personal
characteristics and social family‑based variables, would commit
a heinous crime (homicide or rape) or not. The collection of data took
place at the Papuda Prison in Brazil’s Federal District in 2010. The
data was cross‑checked on interviews with arrested criminals aged
18 to 60 years old.
Results: Criminality was characterized as a risk agent in an economic
environment. The focus was placed on the possibility that
the individual could identify his insertion in the labor market with
risk‑less earnings and a positive relation with the society by means of
a legal and economically feasible activity.
Conclusion: The social interaction of a family life, social and
employment programs lead to an effective support and social/family
stability. A good measure of family interaction and social coexistence
has a negative effect in relation to the intentions of individuals who
wish to commit violent crimes.
