Abstract

Introduction: Cancer may cover nearly all tissues and organs in the
human body necessarily as a consequence of genetic mutations within
a cell associated with the transformation of the structure and function
of deoxyribonucleic acid, as a consequence of abnormal proliferation.
Objective. To assess the nutritional profile of patients with neoplasia
by the methods of Patient-Generated Subjective Nutritional
Assessmentand Subjective Global Assessment, identifying the prevalence
of malnutrition in patients with cancer.
Methods: This is an observational cross-sectional study with a descriptive
and analytical approach. 40 patients of both sexes with cancer
in different locations of the body were interviewed. All of them were
either adults or elderly, with an average age of 56 years old and two different
types of questionnaires were used: the Subjective Global Assessment
of Nutritional Status (SGA) and the Patient-Generated Subjective
Global Assessment (PG-SGA). The most common cancer in the studied
patients was in the digestive tract. A descriptive analysis of the data was
undertaken by means of (absolute and relative) tabulated frequencies,
graphical representations and statistical tests with a confidence level of
95%. Here, a p-value below 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
In the PG-SGA questionnaire, the variables weight, food intake,
symptoms, activity and function are presented as scores. To verify if
these scores were related to the nutritional status, an analysis of variance
(ANOVA) with a confidence level of 95% was used.
Results: It was found among the examined patients that according
to the data presented, there is a statistically significant difference
between the SGA and PG-SGA assessments regarding symptoms and
nutritional status (p = 0.02) and the activity, function and nutritional
status (p = 0.02).
Conclusion: Both questionnaires led to similar effects in terms of a
global assessment of the nutritional status of the patients. Is important
to point out that the PG-SGA assessment provides a high sensitivity
and effectiveness in identifying malnourished patients with cancer
diagnosis, as it allows to identify typical symptoms of this condition.
