Child nutritional status is an indicator of integral health. Therefore, monitoring the growth and weight gain of children facilitates the diagnosis of possible health problems and nutritional risks. The monitoring of growth and of nutritional status during childhood makes it possible for an earlier diagnosis of problems which are likely to occur, such as malnutrition, overweight or obesity in the adult life. Objective: To evaluate the nutritional status of children from 2 to 5 years old, who were breastfed, compared to children who were not breastfed. Methods: This is a transversal analytical study carried out at the Mundo Mágico City Daycare Center in Valparaíso, Goiás, Brazil. The sample included 95 children aged 2 to 5 years old of both sexes. All 95 children were weighted and measured. The research evaluated their weight/age (W/A), height/age (H/A) and body mass index/age (BMI/A) ratios. Data analysis used frequency, descriptive and Student’s t tests with a 95% confidence interval. Results: The results of this study corroborate the statement that malnutrition is less frequent than overweight/obesity both in the breastfed and non-breastfed children. Conclusion: Although the mothers of the studied children recognize the importance of breast milk, almost half of them have not nourished their children with breast milk for at least 6 months. It can be concluded that changes in the eating habits both of breastfed and non-breastfed children may have an impact on their nutritional status in the adult life.
