Therapeutic effect of Reiki in managing physical, emotional/psychological, and spiritual symptoms in people with cancer

Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence on the effects of Reiki in people undergoing cancer treatment. Methods: An integrative review was conducted, guided by the PICo-based question: "What is the scientific evidence on the effects of Reiki in people undergoing cancer treatment?" The research was carried out in July 2022 across the databases Web of Science, Embase (Elsevier), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), SCOPUS (Elsevier), and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). Results: Twenty studies indicated that Reiki has positive effects in the psychological/emotional domains, including reductions in anxiety, depression, and stress, as well as improvements in quality of life and relaxation. In the physical domains, Reiki provided relief from symptoms such as pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue. It also reduced blood pressure, pulse rate, muscle stiffness, and symptoms of peripheral neurotoxicity, resulting in an overall improvement in well-being. Final Considerations: Reiki is suggested to be an effective complementary therapy, promoting well-being, alleviating anxiety, depression, and stress, and improving quality of life and relaxation. It is also effective in reducing physical symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, diarrhea, and pain, as well as mitigating the effects of peripheral neurotoxicity, all without side effects.
