The use of toothpaste for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity:an integrative literature review

Dentin Hypersensitivity (DH) is a common condition that affects millions of people around the world. It is characterized by a painful response to thermal, chemical or mechanical stimuli, resulting from exposure of the underlying dentin due to loss of tooth enamel or gingival recession. Among the treatments available to combat HD, desensitizing toothpastes are a great, easy and simple option that can be used by the patient themselves. In this sense, the present study aims to examine the effectiveness and mechanisms of action of toothpastes in the treatment of Dentin Hypersensitivity. To this end, a search was conducted in the databases PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), using DeCS/MeSH descriptors “Dental Treatment”, “Dental Sensitivity” and “Toothpastes”. Studies published between 2013 and 2024 were selected. The results demonstrated that the effectiveness of toothpastes is supported by clinical evidence, which demonstrates a significant reduction in symptoms of sensitivity to heat, cold and tactile stimuli with regular use. It is concluded that the use of toothpastes represents a promising approach in the management of Dentin Hypersensitivity, although continued efforts are needed to improve the understanding and treatment of this common condition.
