Signs and symptoms of COVID-19 in persons deprived of liberty: Integrative review
Keywords:
Prisoners, Signs and symptoms, COVID-19Abstract
Objective: To describe, according to the literature, the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 in Persons Deprived of Liberty. Method: This is an integrative literature review, in which the search in the Medline databases via Pubmed, Virtual Health Library, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus was performed on November 09, 2022 by combining the Boolean descriptors and operators "sars-cov-2" OR "covid-19" AND "prisons" OR "prisoners" AND "signs AND "symptoms". The search results were organized and analyzed with the aid of Excel and Rayyan software, and 14 studies were selected for this review, and their level of evidence was assessed using the Grade method. Statistical analysis was performed with estimates of relative frequencies based on the absolute values reported in the text of each of the articles. The unreported numbers were as zero. Results: The study showed that 42,279 individuals deprived of liberty were tested, of which 95% are male and 5% are female. Regarding signs and symptoms, 2% were asymptomatic, 93% had a positive RT-PCR and 1% were symptomatic. The most frequent signs and symptoms were fever, cough and headache with only 10% of each, 1% had shortness of breath, 4% runny nose, 8% sore throat, 9% general malaise, 4% diarrhea, 1% myalgia, 2% nausea and vomiting and the others and 1% of deaths were recorded. Conclusion: It is necessary to continue research on this topic in order to expand the dissemination of significant results and contribute to the reduction and control of COVID-19 cases involving prisoners, as well as to the fight against diseases of similar contagion and spread.
