Abstract

Objective: Research suggests a relationship between electrostimulation and strength training to optimize neuromuscular function, but the effects of different configurations generate uncertainties about manipulable variables, including internal and external loads. Objective: To investigate the relationship between the sensory threshold and the external load of strength training. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study divided into three stages: sending electronic questionnaires; application of the Informed Consent Form, collection of anthropometric data and evaluation of pain and sensitivity thresholds; after 72 hours, handgrip strength test and prediction of one repetition maximum (1RM). SPSS version 26.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: Sixteen senescent women were evaluated (60.25 ± 6.48 years; BMI 28.59 ± 5.09 kg/m²). The average dynamic strength in the bench press, leg press and rowing was 62.61 ± 14.08 kg; The isometric force was 27.38 ± 6.15 kgF. The mean sensitivity threshold was 8.1 ± 1.9 mA and the pain threshold was 114.15 ± 56.00 mA. Correlations between dynamic force and sensitivity thresholds (r = -0.137; p = 0.614) and pain threshold (r = 0.391; p = 0.135) were not significant, nor were they for isometric force (r < 0.1; p > 0.05). Conclusion: No metrics were identified that correlated internal perceptions of intensity with external loads. Implications: The study questions the effectiveness of the usual system for estimating external loads based on internal perceptions, showing inconsistency between the two measures.
