Abstract

Objective: Population aging is a phenomenon with broad impacts, due to frailty and comorbidities that increase the risk of complications and death, especially in the context of trauma in regions such as Maranhão, characterized by sociodemographic inequalities. Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations due to trauma in the elderly in Maranhão between 2015 and 2024. Methodology: Descriptive and quantitative research, with data from SIH/DATASUS referring to chapter XX of ICD-10. Elderly individuals ≥60 years old, sociodemographic variables, external causes, and health macroregions were included, with analysis using the chi-square test (p<0.05). Results: There were 63,596 hospitalizations and 2,784 deaths. There was a decrease in hospitalizations in 2020, followed by an increase in 2021. The North ortalecime concentrated 51.5% of cases. Men, older adults aged 60–64, and individuals of mixed race predominated. Falls and other accidents were the main causes. Conclusion: Trauma in the elderly represents a significant public health problem in Maranhão, with regional and social inequalities. This reinforces the need for preventive strategies, improved recordkeeping, and network strengthening.
