Abstract

Objective: Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy, Childbirth, and Puerperium (HDP), such as preeclampsia, eclampsia, gestational, and chronic hypertension, are responsible for a large share of maternal morbidity and mortality in Brazil. This study analyzed data from 2013 to 2023, using sources such as SIH/SUS, SIM, SINASC, and IBGE/DATASUS, with 968,807 hospitalizations and 4,784 deaths due to HDP recorded during this period. Among hospitalized women, 64.2% were between 20 and 39 years old, while deaths from HDP predominantly occurred in the 30-49 age range (66.6%). Of note is the high incidence of HDP-related deaths among adolescents (92.1% of maternal deaths in the 10-14 age group) and women over 40 years old (68.0% of deaths in the 40-49 age group). Over the study period, the national HDP hospitalization rate rose from 12.91 to 18.77 per 10,000 women of reproductive age. Meanwhile, the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) due to HDP remained relatively stable, varying from 11 to 13 per 100,000 live births, with the North Region showing the highest rates. The results indicate that HDP account for about 50% of maternal deaths, highlighting the need for improved public policies and epidemiological surveillance.
