An Overview of Ectopic Pregnancy

Abstract

Objective: Ectopic pregnancy is defined as the implantation of a fertilized egg outside the uterine cavity and is characterized by a high rate of maternal morbidity and mortality. Its therapeutic success is significantly enhanced by early diagnosis, which allows minimally invasive management and the reduction of possible complications such as hemorrhages. However, this diagnosis is commonly made late and may be justified by the lack of interpretation of clinical evidence and misunderstanding of imaging exams that result in false negatives or incorrect diagnosis. This study is an integrative review of the literature based on the PubMed and BVS platforms, based on the selection of articles published between 2015 and 2025. It aims to gather and present the most relevant information about ectopic pregnancy commonly addressed in the works analyzed, such as diagnosis, treatment, clinical repercussions, consequences for future generations, standardization of information, and types of ectopic pregnancy.
