Abstract

Objective: to investigate the perceptions of Brazilian older adults, whether infected or not by SARS-CoV-2, regarding the role of spirituality in maintaining mental health, to identify the most frequent diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to analyze their sense of identity and belonging. Method: qualitative study conducted with 171 older adults living in Brasília in 2022, selected by convenience through social networks and messaging applications. Data collection included a sociodemographic questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using the Iramuteq software and Bardin’s content analysis. Results: 91.8% of participants reported having a religious or spiritual practice, with more than half using social media to foster it. After the pandemic, 15.2% started new medication use, mainly for depression, insomnia, and cognitive disorders. Spirituality emerged as a fundamental resource to cope with difficulties, contributing to emotional balance and comprehensive health care. Conclusion: the pandemic significantly impacted the lives of older adults, increasing physical and mental health demands. Spirituality proved to be an essential element in promoting quality of life and should be encouraged as a biopsychosocial support strategy in public policies and health practices. procedures.
