Beyond glycemic control
the role of GLP-1 analogs in cardiovascular and renal protection
Keywords:
GLP-1 analogs, ; Renal system, Cardiovascular systemAbstract
Objective: Currently, robust evidence demonstrates that GLP-1 analogues not only act on glycemic control but also play a role in protecting the cardiovascular and renal systems of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In this context, the present study aims to evaluate the impacts of GLP-1 analogues on cardiovascular and renal protection. Therefore, this integrative review was conducted based on a literature search conducted in the BVS, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. The inclusion criteria were studies that evaluated the effects of GLP-1 agonists on the cardiovascular and renal systems, including articles in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Seventeen articles underwent methodological application and identified important factors for protecting the renal and cardiovascular systems, highlighting the relevance of these drugs for preventing and reducing the negative impacts of chronic complications in patients with T2DM. Thus, it is understood that GLP-1 analogs represent significant therapeutic promise in the treatment of T2DM, with important impacts on glycemic control and the reduction of renal and cardiovascular risk factors. However, the effective implementation of such therapies still depends on overcoming economic and educational barriers.
